Energy Bills Could Rise by £200 as New Price Cap Announced

Households could face an annual increase of over £200 in energy bills as the new price cap is expected to be announced today. Regulator Ofgem will reveal the updated energy price cap for typical gas and electricity customers across England, Scotland, and Wales on Wednesday.

Predicted Rise in Energy Costs

Analysts at Cornwall Insight predict the cap will climb by £209 a year, reaching £1,850 from July 1. This represents a 13% increase from the current level of £1,641. The price cap limits what suppliers can charge per unit of energy, so actual bills vary based on household consumption. Many families may notice less impact during warmer summer months, but campaigners warn of a difficult winter ahead when heating demand rises significantly.

Reasons Behind the Increase

Energy prices have surged following Iran's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping lane for global oil and gas supplies. Cornwall Insight cautioned that bills could remain elevated into October, even if the conflict subsides, due to damage to energy infrastructure and ongoing supply disruption.

Government Response

Chancellor Rachel Reeves indicated the Government is considering potential targeted and temporary support if the situation worsens, though no additional energy bill assistance has been confirmed yet. Simon Francis of the End Fuel Poverty Coalition said households need reassurance and support, not a summer of suspense.
