Surrey Man Embarks on 37-Mile Charity Trek to Thank Life-Changing Hospital

A Surrey man who once faced the possibility of never walking again is now gearing up to complete a 37-mile charity trek, aiming to express his gratitude to the hospital that transformed his life and the lives of his fellow walkers. Glenn Meyer, aged 66, will undertake the journey titled 'Walking Back to Happiness,' spanning three days from Caterham, Surrey, to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) in Stanmore, with the final steps scheduled for May 7, 2026. This inspiring challenge seeks to raise funds for the RNOH Charity, honoring the exceptional care that enabled Glenn to recover from a debilitating spinal condition that had confined him to a wheelchair.

Unexpected Onset of a Life-Altering Condition

Glenn's story began unexpectedly during a family barbecue in September 2020. He recalls, "I stretched out the footrest of my chair and felt excruciating pain before passing out. My family thought I was having a heart attack. But my heart was fine – my spine was not." Medical examinations revealed a degenerative spinal condition that had severely compressed the nerves in his lower back. A minor movement in the deck chair exacerbated the situation by breaking off disc material, which jammed nerve transmission, worsening his condition. Over the subsequent three years, despite ongoing treatment, Glenn experienced unbearable pain and a significant decline in mobility, ultimately relying on a wheelchair for daily activities.

Transformative Medical Intervention and Recovery Journey

A turning point came when Glenn was referred to consultant spinal surgeon Mr. Julian Leong at the RNOH. Starting in October 2023, he underwent a series of complex surgical procedures to stabilize and reconstruct his spine, which is now internally supported by titanium scaffolding. The recovery process was slow and demanding, with doctors advising Glenn that "walking is your best friend." Embracing this guidance, Glenn began his rehabilitation with modest goals, such as walking to his gate and back, which he described as feeling like a marathon. His perseverance paid off, and by Christmas of that year, he achieved a celebratory milestone by walking to his local pub for his first pint earned through his own steps.

Building Community and Enhancing Well-Being Through Training

As Glenn prepares for the 37-mile trek, the training has yielded benefits beyond physical fitness. Research indicates that loneliness and isolation can lead to serious health issues, while regular exposure to nature boosts both physical and mental well-being. With this in mind, Glenn meticulously planned the 'greenest' route from Caterham to Stanmore. His training walks have attracted a growing group of participants, including old friends from university, neighbors, and new acquaintances, fostering a strong sense of community. Glenn notes, "It's been incredible. People I haven't seen for years are coming along. We're physically fitter and we've built a real community. The walks lift everyone's spirits and that's been an unexpected benefit. It's a real mental and physical health boost for all of us."

Preparing for the Challenge and Looking Ahead

To build stamina for the three-day event, Glenn has gradually increased his walking distances, recently completing back-to-back long-distance training sessions. Reflecting on his journey, he expresses deep gratitude, stating, "Without everyone involved in my care, I wouldn't be standing up, let alone planning something like this. My wife calls them miracle workers and it certainly feels like they are." Despite ongoing challenges, such as a sensation of treading on glass and a dropped left foot, Glenn remains determined and hopeful. He even envisions future walks to maintain fitness and social connections well into his 90s, emphasizing the lasting impact of this experience.
