Rossendale Ramblers have had an exceptionally busy week, showcasing the full spectrum of walks they offer. The week began on Wednesday with a nine-mile walk from Marsden, near Huddersfield. Early in the route, the group of 12 ramblers encountered the northern entrance of the Standedge Canal Tunnel, which holds the distinction of being the longest, deepest, and highest canal tunnel in Britain. The walk continued across the moors to the Pennine Way and Millstone Edge, offering expansive long-distance views before the return journey.
Evening Pub Walk and Challenging Friday Hike
On Thursday evening, nine walkers participated in the first evening pub walk of the year, starting at Birtle on the boundary between Bury and Rochdale. The balmy weather, picturesque scenery, and a sociable hour at the pub afterward made this an unforgettable evening. Friday saw seven intrepid walkers take on a challenging 12-mile walk from Barley, featuring 2,000 feet of ascent. On a bright and pleasant day, the ascent of Pendle Hill via the Ogden Reservoirs was particularly delightful.
Sunday Local Walk and Upcoming Events
Sunday concluded the week with 16 walkers on a six-mile local walk from Helmshore. The route included the impressive Lumb viaduct, followed by a climb through Buckden Woods, where the trees were in fresh leaf and bluebells and garlic were in flower. The walk ended with a final ascent to Beetle Hill. Looking ahead, on Sunday, May 17, a six-mile walk from Tottington will take a wide circle encompassing the Kirklees Trail, Hawkshaw, Redisher Woods, and Sunmerseat. The walk is scheduled to finish by 2 pm, leaving ample time for family activities.
Annual Holiday and Midweek Walk
From Monday, May 18 to Friday, May 22, the group will hold its annual holiday in Sedbergh, home to The Calf, the highest peak in the Howgills. This peak is expected to feature in the itinerary of this wonderfully diverse and sociable walking week. While part of the group is away, those remaining are invited to an 11-mile walk from Barrowford on Wednesday, May 20, which will include the Pendle Way, Weets Hill, and the Leeds & Liverpool Canal.
All walks are free, but after three walks, participants are asked to join The Ramblers at a cost of only £3.75 per month.
