Birmingham Police Respond to Multiple Stabbings in 12 Days

West Midlands Police has acknowledged public concerns following a series of stabbings in Birmingham city centre over a 12-day period. The latest incident occurred on Tuesday, June 23, when an 18-year-old man was stabbed during a fight in Victoria Square at 8:30 pm. He was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Details of the Incidents

The Victoria Square stabbing came just 12 days after two men were injured in a knife attack outside Birmingham's main library in Centenary Square on June 11. Councillor Alex Yip, representing Sutton Wylde Green, expressed alarm at the recurring violence, noting that the latest attack happened near the Council House. He stated, "It's very worrying right on the doorstep of the council house, yet another stabbing very close by to the library [where] another stabbing happened."

Public and Official Reactions

Councillor Yip highlighted the impact on visitors and residents, saying, "It's very worrying for people who are coming in just to visit the city and also for residents." He questioned the effectiveness of current knife crime penalties, noting that even with severe sentencing guidelines, they do not seem to deter offenders. He called for more investment in police resources to prevent such incidents.

Detective Superintendent Lucy Kirwan of West Midlands Police assured the public that the force understands their concerns. "We will have an increased presence in the area to offer reassurance," she said. The force emphasized that knife crime has no place in Birmingham or anywhere in the West Midlands.

Police Response and Enforcement

A police spokesperson outlined ongoing efforts to tackle knife crime, including proactive patrols, targeted operations, and educational work with partners on the dangers of carrying knives. The spokesperson stated, "We've sadly seen how knives can cause serious injury, and harm, and one victim is one victim too many which is why strong enforcement action will continue." They also highlighted initiatives such as weapons sweeps, test purchases from retailers, and direct engagement with young people in schools and transport hubs.

The force urged anyone with information about individuals carrying weapons to report it via 101 or Live Chat, or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111. They reiterated their commitment to making the city centre a safe and welcoming place for everyone.
