Britain First Birmingham Protest Faces Counter-Demo and 'Not Welcome' Message
Britain First Birmingham Protest Faces Counter-Demo

Protesters from the far-right Britain First group gathered in Birmingham city centre today, despite being told they were not welcome in the proudly multi-racial city.

Ignoring Family Pleas

The group ignored pleas from the family of murdered teenager Henry Nowak not to make political capital out of his death. They cited his "slaughter" and the "attempted beheading of a British man in Belfast" as reasons for the demonstration.

Counter-Protest Planned

A counter-protest against Britain First was due to be held in the city centre, with both groups gathering at separate points.

Council Leader's Response

New Birmingham City Council leader Roger Harmer said this week that Britain First "are not welcome here." In a joint statement with senior councillors from the Green Party and Better Birmingham Independents Group, he said: "This weekend, Britain First plan to come to Birmingham to promote messages that seek to divide our communities. My cabinet and I are clear: Britain First are not welcome here. Their views do not represent our city."

We will be covering both sides of today's demonstrations. Stay with us throughout the day.
