Murder suspect released after post-mortem finds Evesham woman died naturally
Man released after post-mortem shows natural causes

West Mercia Police have released a 47-year-old man from custody after a post-mortem examination concluded that a woman whose death prompted a murder investigation died from natural causes.

Initial Arrest and Police Response

Officers were called to an address on Brick Kiln Street in Evesham at around 8.40pm on Wednesday, 14 January. Emergency services attended and sadly discovered the body of a 69-year-old woman.

Given the unexplained nature of the death, which provided sufficient cause for concern, a 47-year-old man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of murder. The arrest was part of a standard procedure by the Major Investigation Unit to fully investigate the circumstances surrounding any sudden and unexplained death.

Post-Mortem Brings Clarity

The investigation took a decisive turn following the completion of a post-mortem. The examination provided a clear medical explanation, establishing that the woman's death was due to natural causes.

As a direct result of this finding, the suspect was released from custody with no further action to be taken against him. The police confirmed there will be no ongoing criminal investigation into the woman's death.

Police Statement on Investigation Protocol

Detective Chief Inspector Gareth Lougher of the Major Investigation Unit explained the force's approach. He stated: “In cases where a death is unexplained and gives us sufficient cause for concern, we will always fully investigate the circumstances.”

“Following the conclusion of a post-mortem, the man arrested has now been released with no further action taken,” DCI Lougher confirmed, bringing a close to this particular police inquiry.

The case underscores the careful and thorough process followed by police when confronted with an initially unexplained death, moving swiftly from arrest to release once forensic evidence provides a definitive answer.
