In a heartening display of community spirit, two anonymous teenagers in Birmingham stepped up where official services fell short, manually gritting dangerous, icy streets to protect their neighbours.
Taking Initiative in Icy Conditions
Following snowfall that swept across Birmingham this week, residents of Bartley Green woke up on Thursday, January 2, to find their local roads untreated and hazardous. With Birmingham City Council facing criticism for the ungritted streets, a local boy and girl decided to act.
The resourceful pair reportedly filled a wheelie bin with salted sand from an official yellow council grit bin. They then took it upon themselves to treat the slippery surfaces on their local roads.
Praise from the Community
Their efforts focused on Hasbury Road, described by one resident as "treacherous," and several adjoining streets. The act did not go unnoticed.
A local resident, posting under the username 'HUI Macdonald' on the neighbourhood website Nextdoor, publicly applauded the duo. "I want to give a round of applause to two young teenagers, a boy and girl, who today got a wheelie bin and filled it with salted sand," the post read.
The resident commended them for "doing something off their own backs after watching people struggle" and vowed to try and find out their names.
The online community was quick to echo this sentiment. Sabina Heywood called the act "heart-warming," praising the teens' initiative, care, and intelligence.
