St Patrick's Day Returns to Birmingham's Irish Centre with Family Fun
The heart of Birmingham's Irish community is set to celebrate St Patrick's Day in style, marking the first such event since the centre's grand reopening. Located in Kings Heath, The Irish Centre will host a sold-out family day on Sunday, March 15, promising a vibrant atmosphere filled with music, dancing, and traditional Irish fare.
A New Home for Irish Traditions
After closing its previous site in Digbeth in 2020, The Irish Centre found a new home in Kings Heath, reopening in November last year. This multifaceted hub includes a bar, hotel, boxing academy, store, and even hosts St. Brendan's Gaelic football team with a full-sized pitch. The move has revitalized the community, providing a central gathering place where old friends reconnect and new memories are made.
Cath, the general manager, shared her excitement about the upcoming celebration. "We're trying to emphasise Sunday will be a family day for all generations," she said. "We're speaking in the bar area which is such a homely room, people love the décor." The event will feature live music throughout the day, with the shop open for visitors to purchase products that evoke memories of home.
Building Community Connections
The Irish Centre has quickly become a beloved spot, with Cath noting the warm reception since reopening. "We constantly get flowers and cards from people who visit us and we've had so many compliments from people who feel at home," she explained. The walls are adorned with photos of individuals connected to the centre over the years, serving as a conversation starter and a tribute to its rich history.
Reflecting on the community spirit, Cath added, "I've noticed people spotting someone here that they haven't seen for years, and it's nice to be a part of that. The longer you talk to someone at the bar, by the end of the conversation, you'll have known 20 people that they know." This sense of belonging is a cornerstone of the centre's appeal, making it more than just a venue—it's a home away from home.
Event Details and Safety Measures
To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, the centre has restricted ticket sales for this inaugural St Patrick's Day event. "We're restricting the number of tickets this year just to see how it goes because it's the first time," Cath stated. "We want it to be safe for everyone where they'll walk through the doors and be greeted with Irish music." Additionally, no on-site parking will be available to allow children to play safely in the grounds.
The celebration will include classic Irish elements such as Guinness, spice bags, live music, and dancing, catering to all ages. With the event already sold out, anticipation is high for a day filled with joy and camaraderie. The Irish Centre is located at 205 Wheelers Lane, King's Heath, Birmingham, B13 0ST, ready to welcome the community for a memorable St Patrick's Day.
