England flags are flying once again on what is believed to be the country's most patriotic street in Birmingham, following a resolution to a council safety dispute that had led to their removal.
Flags return to street known for patriotic displays
The street, in the Kingstanding area of Birmingham, gained a reputation for its extensive display of England flags during major football tournaments. Residents had adorned their homes with dozens of flags, creating a sea of red and white that attracted attention from across the UK.
However, earlier this year, Birmingham City Council ordered the removal of the flags, citing safety concerns. The council argued that the flags, attached to lampposts and other structures, posed a risk to pedestrians and drivers, and could potentially fall and cause injury.
Council safety row sparked backlash
The decision to remove the flags sparked outrage among residents and local politicians, who accused the council of being unpatriotic and heavy-handed. Local MP Jack Dromey described the move as "petty and unnecessary," while residents launched a petition calling for the flags to be reinstated.
According to a council spokesperson, the flags were removed as part of a routine safety inspection. "We have a duty to ensure that public spaces are safe for everyone," the spokesperson said. "The flags were attached in a way that could have caused harm if they fell, and we had to act to prevent any potential accidents."
Compromise reached after negotiations
Following negotiations between residents, the local council, and community leaders, a compromise has been reached. The flags have now been re-erected, this time secured with more robust fixings and placed in positions that do not obstruct pedestrian or vehicle movement.
Resident and flag organiser, John Smith, said: "We are absolutely delighted that the flags are back. This street is known for its patriotism, and it was heartbreaking to see them taken down. We've worked closely with the council to ensure they are safe, and we hope everyone can enjoy them now."
Street's patriotic tradition continues
The street, which has been dubbed the "most patriotic street in England," has a long tradition of flag displays during major sporting events, including the World Cup and the European Championships. In 2018, it was estimated that over 100 flags were flying along the street, making it a popular destination for fans and photographers.
The return of the flags has been welcomed by many, with some residents expressing relief that the matter has been resolved. "It's great to see them back," said local resident Mary Jones. "It brings a sense of community and pride. We're all looking forward to the next tournament."
Council acknowledges community spirit
A Birmingham City Council spokesperson said: "We are pleased that a solution has been found that allows the flags to be displayed safely. We recognise the importance of community spirit and patriotism, and we have worked with residents to ensure that the flags can be enjoyed by everyone without compromising safety."
Flags are now in place ahead of the upcoming football season, with residents planning to add more as tournaments approach. The street is expected to once again become a focal point for fans celebrating England's matches.
