Strictly star Fury's heartbreak as fit dad, 56, dies hiking Yorkshire peak
Gladiators star Fury's dad dies on Three Peaks hike

Gladiators star and Strictly Come Dancing contestant Jodie Ounsley, known as Fury, has shared a devastating tribute to her father following his sudden death during a hike in Yorkshire.

A Sudden Tragedy on the Peaks

Phil Ounsley, a 56-year-old mixed martial arts specialist, collapsed on Sunday while walking Pen-y-Ghent, part of the famous Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge. It is believed he suffered a heart attack.

Despite desperate rescue efforts, including an air ambulance dispatched to the 2,277-foot summit, the attempts to save him were sadly unsuccessful. A source close to the family stated that Phil was "perfectly fit and healthy," making his passing a profound shock to all who knew him.

An Emotional Tribute from a Devastated Daughter

The 24-year-old TV personality, who is preparing to film the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas special next Tuesday, posted a heartbreaking message on Instagram. She shared a childhood photo of herself as a baby in her father's arms.

"Heartbroken," Jodie wrote. "Yesterday, my dad suddenly passed away while doing one of his favourite things—walking Pen-y-Ghent. He had hiked that peak countless times throughout his life, but none of us knew he wouldn't walk back down that day."

She continued, expressing her profound grief and admiration: "I don't have the words. All I can say is that he was, and always will be, my absolute hero. He encouraged me to dream big and loved me wholeheartedly, and for that I will be forever grateful. Until we meet again, Dad."

A Life of Fitness and Charity

Phil Ounsley is remembered as a vibrant and charitable man whose death seems incomprehensible given his active lifestyle. The family source emphasised his character, saying, "He was such a genuinely great guy and did a lot for charity. And he was always exercising and pushing himself to help others. Phil is the last person you would expect something like this to happen to."

His wife, Jo, and Jodie's brother, Jack, are also said to be devastated by the loss.

Jodie Ounsley has become a beloved figure on BBC screens, first through the revival of Gladiators, where she competes as Fury, and now through her upcoming appearance on the Strictly festive special. Prior to her television career, she was a distinguished professional rugby player, representing England sevens and playing for clubs including the Chiefs, Loughborough Lightning, and Sale Sharks before stepping away from the sport last year.

The news has cast a shadow over her anticipated Strictly performance, with fans expected to rally in support of the star during this incredibly difficult time.
