The Rossendale Ramblers have proven that a little stormy weather is no match for a determined group of walkers, having successfully completed several scenic outings in the face of Storm Claudia.
Scenic Walks Defying the Elements
Despite the passing of Storm Claudia, the group's walks this week remained remarkably dry, though some care was needed on occasionally boggy ground. On Wednesday, a party of 17 ramblers embarked on a picturesque nine-mile walk starting from Garstang.
This route took in the curiously named Nicky Nook, a vantage point whose name's origins remain a mystery. From this spot, the walking party was rewarded with magnificent panoramic views stretching across Morecambe Bay and Lancaster.
A Pub Walk to a Local Landmark
The following Saturday, the day after the storm had passed, 12 walkers and three dogs enjoyed a delightful two-hour pub walk setting out from Helmshore. Their destination was the iconic Musbury Tor, a beautifully shaped hill that appears to have castellations running around its summit.
Following their exploration of this local landmark, most of the group headed to a nearby pub for well-earned refreshments, food, and a friendly chat, embodying the social spirit that is central to these community walks.
Upcoming Rambles in the Rossendale Area
The group has an exciting schedule of forthcoming walks for enthusiasts to look forward to. On Sunday, November 23, a six-mile walk from the Edenfield area will explore the remains of the many local mills that once operated in the Cheesden Valley. This walk is scheduled to finish around 1.30pm, allowing plenty of time for weekend family activities.
Then, on Wednesday, November 26, a longer 10-mile walk will commence from Smithills Hall in Bolton, winding its way up to Winter Hill, famous for its radio and television masts. On a clear day, the views from this route are promised to be absolutely splendid.
All walks are free to attend, though after joining for three walks, participants are encouraged to become members of The Ramblers, which costs just £3.75 per month.
