Ripon Grammar School Students Raise Over £9,000 for Parkinson's UK

Students at Ripon Grammar School have successfully raised more than £9,000 to support individuals living with Parkinson's disease, a condition that has deeply impacted many within their school community. The school's annual Charity Week saw pupils meticulously plan and execute a diverse array of activities aimed at generating both funds and awareness for Parkinson's UK.

A Week of Fundraising and Awareness

The fundraising efforts included a variety of engaging events such as games stalls, quizzes, dance competitions, a fashion show, a staff pantomime, bake sales, and sports challenges. These activities were designed to involve the entire school and foster a spirit of community support. The organising team proudly presented a total of £9,050 to Ailsa Dragan, the community fundraiser for Parkinson's UK, during a special school assembly.

Personal Connections Drive Support

Head girl Zara Ali, who nominated Parkinson's UK as this year's beneficiary, highlighted the personal significance of the cause. She explained that supporting the charity was especially meaningful because Parkinson's disease has affected members of the school community and their families. Zara's own grandmother, Janie, sadly passed away due to complications from the disease, adding a poignant layer to the fundraising efforts.

Zara expressed her excitement, stating, "I am excited to know our donations will help fund pioneering research projects, so that new treatments can be developed and future generations do not need to face the same challenges that we do now." She also emphasized the importance of education and awareness, noting that with around 166,000 people living with Parkinson's in the UK and a new diagnosis every 20 minutes, it is crucial to support those affected.

Impact of the Donation

Ailsa Dragan addressed the students during the assembly, saying, "Between you, you’ve raised over £9,000, it’s obviously an incredible amount of money and we’re going to make sure it’s put to good use, towards supporting people to live well with Parkinson’s here and now, through things like our Parkinson’s local advisors and helpline and also researching for those better treatments and that cure. A massive thank you from myself and the whole of the Parkinson’s community to everybody from Ripon Grammar School."

The funds raised will contribute to vital medical research projects and support services for individuals and families dealing with Parkinson's, one of the fastest-growing progressive neurological conditions globally. Zara thanked all supporters, expressing delight that the fundraising would aid sufferers and boost research efforts.
