An asbestos warning has been issued following a large fire at an industrial estate in Oldbury this morning, Saturday, May 23. Firefighters were called to Rood End Road Industrial Estate at approximately 5:30 am. The building's roof may have contained asbestos cement, raising concerns among local residents.
Fire Details and Response
West Midlands Fire Service confirmed that around 50 firefighters attended the scene, with crews from Smethwick, West Bromwich, and Handsworth among the first to arrive. The fire engulfed 100% of a single-storey factory building measuring approximately 40 meters by 30 meters. Ten fire engines, two hydraulic platforms, specialist units, and fire officers brought the total number of personnel to over 60. Crews are using hydraulic platforms, aerial drones, and breathing apparatus to bring the fire under control. The incident is expected to be protracted, and further updates will be provided as available.
Health Advice and Asbestos Warning
A spokesperson for Sandwell Council stated: "It has been identified that the premises may have had an asbestos cement roof. It is possible that some of these materials may have been released in the smoke plume and deposited in ash and debris on a section of Pel Crescent." However, the UK Health Security Agency advises that the risks to health are low, as asbestos fibers are not readily released into the air from such materials. The majority of fibers remain trapped within the material.
Residents are advised to keep windows and doors closed and avoid the area. If they find ash or debris from the fire on their property, they should leave it alone and contact Sandwell Council at 0121 368 1177. If it is absolutely necessary to move debris, such as from a car windscreen, they should dampen it with water, wear protective gloves, and double-bag the debris for disposal. Do not sweep or vacuum debris, as this could create airborne dust. If dust is present in gardens, do not mow the lawn until it has been cleared.
Symptoms and Further Information
Residents experiencing symptoms such as difficulty breathing, watery eyes, or a cough as a result of the fire should contact their GP or NHS 111. Sandwell Council will assess the situation and arrange for decontamination of the area, likely early next week. West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed that no injuries have been reported from the blaze.
