Birmingham Celebrates Warmest Day After Record Wet Winter
Birmingham residents embraced the warmest day of the year so far with street dancing, skating, and lively beer gardens, marking a joyful end to the wettest winter on record. On Thursday, March 5, the city centre came alive as Brummies clocked off work and revelled in the sunny weather, driving temperatures up to a balmy 17 degrees Celsius.
Record Winter Gives Way to Spring Sunshine
The West Midlands experienced its wettest winter on record over the past few months, with grey, cold, and wet days affecting moods across the region. However, the sun's emergence yesterday brought a wave of optimism and energy, transforming the urban landscape into a hub of social activity and outdoor enjoyment.
Beer Gardens Bustle with After-Work Crowds
After-work crowds quickly filled beer gardens across town, with popular spots like Purecraft Bar and Kitchen on Waterloo Street and Theatrix on Colmore Row becoming bustling hubs. These bars offer some of the most enviable views in Birmingham, facing the historic Victoria Square and the iconic Floozie in the Jacuzzi fountain, providing a picturesque backdrop for celebrations.
Centenary Square Transforms into Skating and Dancing Hub
Up on Centenary Square, skaters and street dancers made the most of the sunny afternoon, turning the space outside the Birmingham REP and Symphony Hall into a vibrant social area. The fountains, which have been off since the end of 2023, were recently used for the world premiere of the new film Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, where water was piped in to reflect a giant flaming logo.
Since then, the surface has dried up, allowing young people to reclaim it as a skating rink for rollerskating and blading. With speakers pumping out music, skaters gathered to enjoy the smooth surface, while street dancers occupied the corner nearest Symphony Hall, busting joyful moves in the late afternoon sun.
A Citywide Celebration of Spring
This spontaneous celebration highlights how Birmingham residents are eager to soak up the sunshine after a challenging winter. From packed outdoor bars to creative uses of public spaces, the city demonstrated its resilience and community spirit, turning a simple warm day into a memorable event filled with music, movement, and merriment.
