Birmingham's much-anticipated festive event, the Jewellery Quarter Christmas Light Switch On, has been officially cancelled as Storm Claudia approaches the UK.
Event Cancelled Amid Safety Fears
The Jewellery Quarter Business Improvement District (BID) made the difficult decision to call off Friday evening's celebrations on Thursday, November 13. After months of careful planning, organisers concluded that public safety could not be guaranteed given the severe weather forecast.
The Met Office has issued an Amber 'danger to life' warning for the West Midlands, predicting heavy and persistent rainfall throughout Friday. Forecasters anticipate between 40-60mm of rain across the region, with some areas potentially experiencing up to 80mm.
Official Statement from Organisers
In a heartfelt announcement, the BID expressed their disappointment. "We're very sorry to share that tomorrow night's Christmas Light Switch On event has been cancelled," a spokesperson stated. "Due to circumstances out of our control we had to make the devastating decision to call off our wonderful event."
The statement continued, emphasising that the escalation from a Yellow to an Amber weather warning left them with no alternative. "This is never a decision we take lightly. Our team, partners and local businesses have all worked hard to prepare a fantastic event, and we know how much the community looks forward to this moment each year."
What Happens Next?
While the outdoor light switch-on and fireworks display cannot proceed, other indoor events are still scheduled to take place at various JQ venues. Organisers are encouraging the community to support local traders and venues where possible, while urging caution when travelling in the expected poor conditions.
The BID concluded their announcement by thanking the community for their continued support and promising updates on future festive activities. Despite this setback, the spirit of Christmas in the Jewellery Quarter remains, with hopes turning to rescheduled events once the storm passes.
