Rossendale Ramblers had a busy week with four walks attracting 57 participants who collectively covered 55 miles, encountering only occasional rain. The group's activities ranged from a challenging 23-mile hike to a leisurely two-hour pub walk.
Wednesday Walk from Haigh Hall Country Park
On Wednesday, 14 ramblers set off from near Haigh Hall Country Park in Wigan for an 11-mile walk. The route included the site of a former colliery, two war memorials, various woods, and several hills, offering a varied experience.
Friday Challenge Walk from Chipping
Friday featured the annual challenge walk, a 23-mile epic starting from Chipping. Thirteen members completed the entire distance, with another joining halfway with water supplies. The walk included Parlick Hill, Fairsnape Fell, Fiendsdale Head, and Hazelhurst Fell, resulting in a total ascent of 3,200 feet.
Saturday Pub Walk from Birtle
In contrast, Saturday saw 20 walkers and three dogs enjoy a scenic two-hour pub walk from Birtle, Bury. Most participants spent an extra hour or more over lunch and socializing in the pub. Notably, three of the challenge walkers from the previous day also joined, likely warming down.
Sunday Walk from Holcombe Village
On Sunday, nine ramblers completed a six-mile walk from Holcombe Village, taking in local hills and ascending Peel Tower, which was open to visitors that day.
Upcoming Walks
Looking ahead, on Sunday, June 28, the group will lead a six-mile walk from Bold Venture Park in Darwen, visiting Darwen Tower, Darwen Moor, Earnsdale Reservoir, and Sunnyhurst Woods. The walk is expected to finish by 2pm, allowing time for family. On Wednesday, July 1, an 11-mile walk from Barrowford will showcase Blacko Hill, Weets Hill, and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. The following evening, another popular two-hour pub walk will take place from Baxenden, offering an easy introduction to the group.
