The Corinthians: We Were The Champions
Women's football has evolved into a global phenomenon, but its history is marked by struggle and triumph. The first recorded match dates back to May 7, 1881, with popularity soaring during World War I. By 1921, around 150 women's clubs existed, drawing crowds of up to 45,000 fans.
However, on December 5, 1921, the Football Association imposed a ban, deeming football "unsuitable for females." This sidelined the women's game to public parks for nearly five decades.
The Corinthians: We Were The Champions tells the incredible true story of the Corinthians Ladies FC from Manchester, who defied this ban to become global champions. Through interviews with ten surviving players, this feature-length documentary reveals how these working-class girls challenged the male-dominated establishment.
Despite the ban, the Corinthians achieved remarkable success, winning a European Cup in 1957 and an unofficial World Cup in 1960. Yet, their achievements were largely forgotten until now. The film combines unseen archive footage, animations, and a punk soundtrack to deliver a compelling narrative.
Screening Information: Until Tuesday, April 28. For tickets, visit the website or call the Box Office at 0161 200 1500. Venue: HOME, 2 Tony Wilson Place, Manchester M15 4FN.
Creativity is a Right, Not a Privilege
Tracing Steps, a dance studio in Rochdale, champions the underrepresented with its motto: "Creativity is a right, not a privilege." The studio fosters a safe, supportive environment for all, from young people to the elderly, including neurodivergent individuals and those with disabilities.
Owner Martina Coggins emphasizes that Tracing Steps is more than a dance school—it's a community focused on building trust and confidence. Attendees, such as Katie Haigh, who uses an on-site walker, highlight how adaptations ensure everyone can participate and shine in their own way.
This approach challenges stereotypes and promotes inclusivity in the arts, ensuring background does not hinder artistic expression.
