With giant slabs of sponge cake covered in icing and sprinkles, chunks of chocolate concrete, mega cookies, and fresh crusty cobs straight out of the oven, The Cake Place feels like the kind of bakery you would find in Birmingham back in the old days. However, the spot on Dads Lane, just between Stirchley and Kings Heath, is brand new.
A Neighbourhood Gem
Featuring a sunny outdoor cake terrace, indoor seating for rainy days, and prices so low you can get everyone a treat for picnics in Kings Heath or Highbury Parks, the shop is a little neighbourhood gem. It was founded by Sinead Keenahan, 23, and Amber Hickey, 20, both born and bred Brummies with big hopes to keep prices low.
That means almost everything on the menu is under £2, with a couple of options for splashing out if you fancy something really indulgent, like a £3.50 Nutella cookie pie. Their hope is that everyone who pops in can get something special.
Great Value Treats
The giant hunks of lemon drizzle or sponge topped with jam and coconut are so massive you could split them in half and still feel like it is good value. And they are only £1.95 each. The brand new Pineapple Road station is a ten-minute walk away from the bakery, so you can always pop there to stock up on old-school pineapple creams to take with you as you journey into town. Alternatively, you can get everyone a £1.50 sausage roll and sit outside with a coffee and relax.
We popped in to interview Sinead and Amber, and you can read that in full here. We would love for you to support our journalism. The bakery is not the only good reason to head over to Dads Lane, by the way. You will read more about the brilliant things nearby that make it worth the journey over here. Leave room for scallops with lashings of salt and vinegar!
