Coblyn: A Magical Family Show Inspired by Welsh Folklore
A vibrant new outdoor production titled Coblyn is set to enchant families in Cardiff this February. This family-friendly celebration of Welsh folklore is a collaborative effort by Kitsch & Sync Collective, Hijinx, and Theatr Iolo, made possible through funding from the Welsh Government St David’s Day Fund.
Performance Details and Accessibility
The show will be performed next to Chapter’s community garden, featuring an unruly gang of magical gnomes who spread chaos and mischief in a 20-minute spectacle. Free performances are scheduled throughout the day on Saturday, February 28, and Sunday, March 1, at Chapter in Cardiff.
Coblyn is a visual performance that includes some Welsh language, but it is designed to be accessible for Welsh learners and non-Welsh speakers alike. To ensure inclusivity, every performance will offer a guided Touch Tour and live Audio Description available in both English and Welsh for blind or visually impaired attendees.
Community Engagement and Workshops
In addition to the main show, Kitsch & Sync Collective, Hijinx, and Theatr Iolo are hosting Free Family Folk Dancing workshops during Half Term. These sessions will take place at Chapter on February 17, 18, and 19, led by experienced Welsh folk dancer Nia Rees. The workshops are suitable for children aged seven and over, along with their families.
Tickets for the workshops are free but must be booked in advance through Chapter.org. All sessions will be conducted bilingually by a Welsh speaker, promoting cultural immersion and language learning.
Artist Insights and Cultural Significance
Kylie Ann Smith from Kitsch & Sync Collective expressed her excitement about the project, stating, "I'm really excited to be making a new show inspired by Welsh folklore and magic with the wonderful team at Hijinx & Theatr Iolo! I always enjoyed celebrating St David's day as a child, so it’s wonderful to have the chance to bring families together for a special weekend of free performances outside Chapter."
This initiative not only entertains but also fosters community bonds and cultural appreciation, making it a standout event for families in Cardiff.
