Families across North Wales are invited to embark on an enchanting festive adventure this December as Llangollen Railway brings back its beloved Sion Corn Santa Special services for three magical weekends.
A Magical Welsh Christmas Experience
The specially restored heritage railcar will transport passengers on a heartwarming journey from Corwen to Llangollen on December 5, 12 and 19, with departures scheduled at 10am and 12.20pm each day. Tickets are priced at £12 per person, offering exceptional value for a unique seasonal experience.
Every child's ticket includes a special gift from Sion Corn himself, who personally greets each young traveller during the journey. The cheerful figure spreads festive joy throughout the heated, comfortable carriages, creating unforgettable memories for families.
Celebrating Welsh Christmas Traditions
Sion Corn, meaning 'Chimney John' in Welsh, represents a cherished part of Wales' Christmas folklore. This storytelling character brings warmth and community spirit to the season, serving as the Welsh equivalent to Santa Claus while maintaining distinct cultural traditions.
Ian Lebbon, Director of the Llangollen Railway Trust, emphasised the importance of preserving this tradition: "Marking this Welsh language Christmas tradition is so important to us at Llangollen Railway. The Sion Corn trains bring communities together to celebrate the season in a way that's uniquely Welsh – full of warmth, community, and pride in our heritage."
Perfect Family Outing During Term Time
The service provides an ideal opportunity for group trips, home-educated children, and younger families seeking festive activities during term time. The relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere combines strong Welsh cultural elements with traditional Christmas magic.
Booking arrangements are straightforward through the Llangollen Railway office. Reservations can be made by calling 01978 860979 during office hours (Monday to Friday, 9.30am-4.30pm) or by emailing info@llangollen-railway.co.uk.
Lebbon added: "We're delighted to offer this magical experience once again and look forward to welcoming everyone aboard." The railway encourages early booking to avoid disappointment for this popular seasonal attraction that celebrates Welsh heritage while creating new family traditions.
