A vibrant mosaic art installation has been unveiled at Llandudno railway station, created by students from Ysgol Y Gogarth as part of Community Rail Week and the national Railway 200 celebrations marking two centuries of modern railways.
Creative Collaboration
The colourful panels were developed by pupils from the local Additional Learning Needs (ALN) school, working alongside artist Mel Roberts of Mazin Mosaics, teachers, and support staff. Inspired by journeys along the Conwy Valley Line, local landmarks, and the history of railways in North Wales, the artwork is now permanently installed at the station for passengers and visitors to enjoy.
Weekly Workshops
Over the course of 12 weekly sessions, funded by Transport for Wales, students explored design, colour, and storytelling while building confidence and teamwork skills through this shared creative project.
Mel Roberts of Mazin Mosaics said: “The pupils have been engaged, eager to learn and have grown in confidence. They should be proud, as I am, of the beautiful mosaics.”
Janine Tennant-Jones, teacher at Ysgol Y Gogarth, said the project offered “authentic opportunities for young people to develop creativity, confidence and collaboration while engaging with their local area.”
Community Rail Partnership
The project was delivered by the Conwy Valley and North Wales Coast Community Rail Partnership, with funding from Transport for Wales, as part of the national Railway 200 celebrations.
Karen Williams, community rail officer, said: “Week after week, the pupils showed outstanding determination and passion. A huge thank you to everyone involved.”
The unveiling took place during Community Rail Week, which celebrates community-led projects connecting people and places through the rail network.
