Sacked EastEnders star Jamie Borthwick breaks silence with 2026 hope
Axed EastEnders actor Jamie Borthwick shares 2026 hope

Former EastEnders actor Jamie Borthwick has broken a prolonged social media silence with a sombre festive message, following his sacking from the BBC soap earlier this year.

A Sombre Festive Return

The 31-year-old actor, who had played the role of Jay Brown since 2006, was dismissed from the show after using what the BBC termed an "entirely unacceptable" derogatory term against disabled people. The incident occurred on the set of Strictly Come Dancing in June 2025.

After largely staying off social media since his axing, Borthwick returned to Instagram over Christmas. He posted a black-and-white image of himself looking glum while wearing a paper Christmas hat. The picture was accompanied by the caption: "Wishing everybody a very merry Christmas and let's hope for a slightly better 2026 for us all xx."

The Incident and BBC's Response

Borthwick was initially suspended by the BBC following the on-set incident in June. Three months later, in September 2025, his departure from Albert Square was made permanent. A spokesperson for BBC Studios, which produces the long-running soap, confirmed the news.

"We can confirm that Jamie Borthwick will not be returning to EastEnders," the statement read. "We do not comment on individual matters." In a separate comment on the actor's language, the BBC stated it was "in no way reflects the values or standards we hold and expect."

Borthwick's Public Apology

Following the initial incident in June, Jamie Borthwick issued a public apology for his actions. He expressed deep regret for the offence caused and took full responsibility for his words.

"I am deeply sorry for any offence and upset my words and actions have caused," Borthwick said. "It is no excuse, but I did not fully understand the derogatory term I used and its meaning. That is on me completely. Now I am aware, I am deeply embarrassed to have used the term and directed it in the way I did. It was wrong."

The actor's future projects remain unconfirmed as he looks towards the new year.
