A former contestant on ITV's The 1% Club has shared what it is truly like to meet host Lee Mack in person. The popular comedian has fronted the challenging quiz show since 2022, where 100 contestants must use logic, reasoning, and common sense to answer a series of questions. One wrong answer leads to immediate elimination.
Contestant's Experience on the Show
Ryan Alexander, who appeared on the programme, admitted he had hoped word puzzles would not feature. He told OLBG: "I think I'm very good with puzzles and maths, and the final 1% question was a letter question. My brain doesn't focus very well on words and things, and it was basically a question about clocks and what word was represented. As soon as the word thing was mentioned, I overthought everything." He added that he ran out of time and could not verbally give his answer as contestants use a tablet.
Despite the elimination, Ryan described the experience as "surreal" and said: "I got to attempt to do something that not a lot of people have done. The experience to me was not as valuable as the cash, because that would have been an additional bonus. Being a part of the show was fantastic."
Lee Mack's Behind-the-Scenes Personality
Reflecting on meeting the host, Ryan said: "Lee was exactly how you expect him to be. He was approachable, he was laughing and joking between the questions, he was asking people a bit more about their stories, and then at the end, when obviously I wasn't successful, he'd come over and commiserate. He was really nice."
Ryan emphasised that Mack was not just going through the motions: "Lee wasn't just there to do a job, he actually seemed to care and was quite happy for Zoe, who won on the day. It was such a fun day."
Post-Show Recognition
Ryan also shared that after the episode aired, he was recognised by a cashier at Morrisons and later at a wedding. He hosted a watch party with his family and enjoyed the camaraderie with a fellow contestant who sat next to him in the studio.
