A beloved Chester street musician is trading the pavement for a prestigious stage this holiday season, presenting two special Christmas concerts that promise to dazzle audiences.
From Eastgate Clock to Concert Stage
Violinist Philip Chidell, who regularly entertains crowds beneath Chester's iconic Eastgate Clock, will perform with his full orchestra at Chester Town Hall on Thursday, December 4. The glittering festive concerts will take place at 2.30pm and 7.30pm, marking a significant step up from his usual busking spot.
Following successful previous performances at the same venue, Philip will be joined by his ensemble of 20 young professional musicians. The concerts will also feature several special surprise guests making their debut appearances with the orchestra, adding an extra layer of magic to the celebrations.
A Musical Journey from Prodigy to Professional
Philip's musical journey began when he started studying violin at just six years old. His exceptional talent earned him a place at Manchester's prestigious Chetham's School of Music two years later, where he became their youngest ever student.
His career quickly blossomed with performances across the UK, and at age 13 he performed as a soloist with an orchestra for the first time. Philip has since graced stages at renowned venues including:
- Bridgewater Hall
- Royal Festival Hall
- Manchester Cathedral
- St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle
Building Musical Dreams in Chester
Eighteen months ago, Philip fulfilled a long-held ambition by establishing his own orchestra. Together they have already staged five successful concerts in Chester, each attracting large and enthusiastic audiences.
The upcoming Christmas performances are set to be their most ambitious yet. Philip shared his excitement about the programme: "Audiences can look forward to an enchanting celebration of festive music and orchestral favourites, filled with warmth and seasonal cheer. The programme will feature sparkling dances and waltzes, nostalgic melodies, and some of the most cherished Christmas carols."
He added that the performances would capture everything from "the lively spirit of a winter sleigh ride to moments of quiet beauty and serenity," all within the beautiful setting of Chester Town Hall.
