Michael Byrne, the British actor who appeared in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, James Bond films, and Coronation Street, has died at the age of 82. His death was confirmed by his family on June 30, 2026.
Career spanning six decades
Byrne began his career on stage in the 1960s, performing alongside Maggie Smith and Robert Stephens in productions such as Shaffer's The Royal Hunt of the Sun and Pinero's Trelawny of the Wells. He later transitioned to television and film, becoming a familiar face in British and international productions.
His film credits include the role of Colonel Vogel in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, where he acted opposite Harrison Ford. He also played Smythe, the English commanding officer, in Mel Gibson's Braveheart, and appeared in the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies alongside Pierce Brosnan. In 2010, he portrayed the powerful wizard Gellert Grindelwald in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.
Coronation Street role
Byrne joined the cast of ITV's Coronation Street in 2008, playing Ted Page, the long-lost gay father of Gail Platt and ex-lover of Audrey Roberts. His character memorably gave Gail away at her wedding to Joe McIntyre. He remained on the show until 2010, and the character was written out in 2021.
Other television appearances included BBC's Casualty, A Touch of Frost, and Sharpe. His extensive filmography also includes The Eagle Has Landed, A Bridge Too Far, The Medusa Touch, The Saint, The Sum of All Fears, and Gangs of New York.
Personal life and final years
Byrne is survived by his former wife Carole, who cared for him in his later years, their two daughters Tara and Bryony, and three grandchildren: Tom, Chloe, and Jasmine. His final stage performance was in Schiller's Mary Stuart in 2018, after which he retired following an extraordinary 60-year career.
