Sparks drummer Hilly Boy Michaels dies aged 74

The music world is in mourning following the death of Hilly Boy Michaels, the legendary drummer celebrated for his work with the art-pop band Sparks.

Official Announcement and Fan Tributes

The sad news was confirmed by Sparks founders, brothers Ron and Russell Mael, in a post on the band's official Facebook page. Their statement read: "We are saddened by the passing of Hilly Boy Michaels. He was Sparks’ drummer during the Big Beat (1976) era, but stayed in the 'Sparks realm' throughout the years. Our thoughts are with his friends and family."

Fans quickly flooded the comments section with heartfelt messages. One admirer described him as a "lovely unique guy and rock solid musician," while another offered "Condolences and LVX to Hilly, and all family and friends. He was a great drummer musician..." A third fan highlighted his talent, calling him a "hidden gem" and specifically praising the track Calling All Girls.

A Storied Career in Music

Before his rise to prominence with Sparks, Hilly Boy Michaels' first professional musical experience was playing in a band called Joy. This group notably featured a young Michael Bolton before his own solo fame.

Michaels was initially hired as a session musician for the recording of Sparks' 1976 album, Big Beat. Based in New York at the time, he was the only session player brought in for the project. His contribution was so valued that the group invited him to join them on their subsequent North American tour.

Beyond his work in the studio, Michaels also appeared with the band in the 1977 film Rollercoaster, performing the songs Big Boy and Fill'er Up.

Collaborations and Lasting Legacy

His extensive career saw him collaborate with an impressive roster of other artists. His musical partnerships included work with The Cherry Vanilla Band, Peach & Lee, Ellen Foley, and The Hunter/Ronson Band. He also shared his talent alongside other legends such as Dan Hartman, John Mellencamp, Ronnie Wood, and Marianne Faithfull.

The cause of his death has not been publicly released. Hilly Boy Michaels leaves behind a rich musical legacy cherished by fans, fellow musicians, and all who knew him.
