Birmingham's King of Clubs nightclub has been forced to close after more than 100 people hurled glass bottles and other objects at police during a violent disorder outside the venue. The incident occurred in John Bright Street, city centre, as revellers were leaving the club at around 10.30pm on Saturday, May 23. Evidence of drug taking was also found at the scene.
Police Response
Supt Karl Thomas of West Midlands Police stated: 'At approximately 10.36pm as people were leaving the premises, an incident occurred whereby a violent disorder occurred involving in excess of 100 people using items as weapons.' Officers applied for an expedited review of the club's licence, citing serious concerns about the venue's ability to meet licensing objectives. The force revealed the premises had previous incidents requiring police intervention.
Licensing Hearing
Birmingham City Council's licensing sub-committee heard the review request on Thursday, May 28. Club supervisor Angele Nelson and security provider Ollie Amidipe attended, both claiming they were unaware of the incident. Committee chair Coun Diane Donaldson confirmed the premises licence had been suspended, meaning the club cannot open pending a full review within 28 days.
West Midlands Police confirmed no officers suffered serious injuries despite the bottle-throwing incident and are continuing their enquiries into the disorder.
