Michelle Yeoh Initially Refused Wicked Role Over Singing Fears
Michelle Yeoh Turned Down Wicked Role Over Singing

Academy Award-winning actress Michelle Yeoh has disclosed that she was originally too terrified to sing live to accept the part of Madame Morrible in the highly anticipated Wicked film adaptation.

The Daunting Phone Call

Speaking on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Yeoh recounted how director Jon M. Chu initially approached her for the role. She admitted to having no prior connection to the Wicked musical, despite being very familiar with The Wizard of Oz.

Her initial enthusiasm quickly turned to apprehension after reading the script. I call him back and I say, ‘Jon, my love, it’s a musical – and I don’t sing’, she explained, highlighting her lack of professional singing experience.

Convincing a Visionary Director

Director Jon M. Chu, whom Yeoh described as a visionary, was not deterred. He reassured her, famously saying don’t worry about it and managed to convince her to consider what she felt was nearly impossible.

Despite her doubts, Yeoh agreed to take on the part of Madame Morrible after a pivotal follow-up call. Both Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo personally appealed to her, insisting it was imperative and important that you join us now.

Conquering Stage Fright with Co-Star Support

Even with her commitment secured, the fear of performing live vocals on set remained intense. Yeoh confessed, When I had to sing, I was terrified, specifically mentioning the awe she felt watching Grande and Erivo sing live.

During the recording of 'The Wizard And I' with Cynthia Erivo, Yeoh was so nervous she described herself as literally squeaking. It was Erivo's direct intervention that provided the crucial confidence boost. Taking Yeoh by the arms, Erivo told her, I know you can do this, Michelle, I’ve heard you sing.

Yeoh now credits her co-star with giving her the self-assurance needed to deliver her musical performance, a testament to the supportive atmosphere on the Wicked set.
