Truro and Penwith College has announced the appointment of a new leader, with Carl Riding set to become its next Principal and Chief Executive.
Unanimous Decision by Governors
The college's board of governors made the decision unanimously following final interviews held on November 27, 2025. The recruitment process received support from an external specialist agency and the team of the Further Education Commissioner.
Mr Riding is currently the Vice Principal for Employer Partnerships and Adult Provision at the Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group. During his tenure there, he played a key role in achieving consecutive Ofsted 'Outstanding' ratings, increasing income, and leading significant capital investment projects.
A Leader Committed to Cornwall
Carl Riding expressed his delight at the appointment, stating he was "delighted and proud" to be joining the Cornish institution. He highlighted the college's vital role in the region's education and skills sector.
"I am committed to providing strong, visible leadership as we continue to drive high standards and build for the future," he said. "With such talented staff and motivated learners, the college is well placed to continue making a significant difference locally, regionally and beyond."
Seamless Leadership Transition
Robert Townsend, Chair of the Corporation, praised the incoming principal. "Carl demonstrated outstanding leadership, strategic insight and a clear commitment to learners, staff and the communities we serve," he said. "His achievements and values align perfectly with the direction of the College as we look to the future."
Mr Riding will formally assume the role in March 2026. He will work alongside the current principal, Martin Tucker, during a short transition period. Mr Tucker's final day in post will be March 31, 2026.
The appointment marks a new chapter for one of Cornwall's leading further education providers, with the incoming leader bringing extensive experience in both further and higher education sectors.
