The Rhyl Ladies Creative Writing Group convenes every Friday at 10am at the Gorwel Newydd independent living scheme on West Parade. Organized by Frances, the sessions are open to any local women who wish to participate, regardless of their writing experience or age. The group's primary mission is to inspire members to write purely for enjoyment and personal fulfillment.
Inspiring Stories from Members
Joan Withers, age 90, has been attending the group for several years. She emphasizes that the focus is not on being a good writer but on having fun and giving your brain a workout. "It doesn't matter whether you are a good writer, the whole point is to come along, have fun and give your brain a workout," she said.
Each week, participants have the opportunity to read their work aloud if they choose, followed by a group writing task where Frances provides inspiration for the week's writing. Afterward, they enjoy a casual chat over tea and biscuits, leaving with a new title to spark further creativity before the next session.
A Welcoming Atmosphere for All
Newcomers like Pat have found the group incredibly welcoming. "There's always something to smile about," she shared. Cheryl, another member, appreciates listening to everyone's contributions, noting, "It's interesting how people's imaginations go off in different directions."
The group is free to attend and actively encourages new members to join, proving that creativity, connection, and community can begin with just a single sentence. Joan adds, "Come along and have a drink and see what we get up to. There's no pressure to read out your work, if you don't want to."

The Rhyl Ladies Creative Writing Group meets at Gorwel Newydd, 76-82 West Parade, Rhyl, at 10am every Friday from December to March. Participants gather in the reception area. From April to November, meetings relocate to Rhyl's Women's Centre on Water Street. This initiative highlights the importance of accessible adult education and community engagement in Rhyl, Denbighshire.
