UK Management College Aims for University Status After Salford Campus Launch
UK Management College Targets University Status with Salford Expansion

UK Management College Sets Sights on University Status with New Salford Campus

UK Management College (UKMC) is marking its tenth anniversary with a bold vision: to transform into a fully-fledged university. This ambition follows the recent opening of its new campus in Salford, Greater Manchester, as part of a strategic expansion aimed at serving underrepresented communities across the UK.

A Decade of Growth and a New Strategic Direction

Founded in 2016 by Zahidul and Abida Islam, UKMC began with a mission to provide educational opportunities to socially disadvantaged groups and mature learners returning to study. From a modest start with a handful of students, the college has grown exponentially. It now supports 7,000 learners across three sites in Greater Manchester, plus campuses in Sunderland, Newcastle, and Derby.

Professor Jason Powell, Provost and Chief Academic Officer, revealed that the college has formally embarked on a journey to secure university status and independent degree-awarding powers. This goal is central to the "Transforming Lives Strategic Plan 2025 to 2030," developed through extensive consultation with students, staff, and external stakeholders.

"We aspire to be a university in our own right," stated Professor Powell. "This is a key marker of our ambition, credibility, and legitimacy. It will grant us greater autonomy for the future, reinforcing our commitment to intergenerational and social justice for those traditionally denied access to higher education."

Expanding Educational Offerings Through Partnerships

While working toward university status, UKMC continues to strengthen its academic portfolio through partnerships with established universities. It currently collaborates with institutions like Canterbury Christ Church University, Arts University Bournemouth, and the University of Wolverhampton to deliver degree programs in fields such as fashion and events management.

These partnerships were cultivated after active community engagement starting in 2023. The college consulted with local organizations, faith groups, Jobcentre Plus, and the NHS to identify educational needs. "We discovered a significant demand for higher education programs among learners excluded from traditional university pathways," explained Professor Powell. "Our strategic alliances were formed to create opportunities for these individuals."

The Salford Campus: A Hub for Emerging Opportunities

The new Salford campus at Carolina Way, which opened in January 2026, is strategically located approximately 15 minutes from MediaCity. Professor Powell highlighted Salford's growing economy as a hotspot for business and skill development, making it an ideal setting for learners.

UKMC emphasizes a student-centered approach, with founder and CEO Zahidul Islam driving a culture of "active listening" to community needs. "We believe access to education is a fundamental human right, irrespective of social background," Professor Powell added. This philosophy has guided the college's expansion into the North East and East Midlands, addressing social disadvantage replicated across the UK.

Connecting Students with Future Careers

To bridge education and employment, UKMC hosts regular public events and open days. The upcoming Careers Fair on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at the Salford campus will feature exhibitors including NHS England, Manchester City Council, Salford City Council, KPMG, Wellway Rehab Solutions, and Kids Planet Salford.

Olympic medallist Chelsie Giles MBE will be a guest speaker, and activities will include mock interviews, CV building workshops, and career guidance sessions. "Today's student is tomorrow's stakeholder," remarked Professor Powell. "These events are crucial for enhancing employability and personal growth, and we will continue to host them consistently to inspire future learners."

As UKMC progresses toward its 2030 goals, the college remains dedicated to its core mission of widening participation and providing transformative educational experiences across its national network.
