Every child deserves the best possible start in life, which includes safe play areas, strong educational foundations, and support for families managing work and home pressures. Across England, this vision is now becoming a reality through targeted investments aimed at improving daily life. Playgrounds nationwide are set to receive new funding to prevent the disrepair that has plagued many current play spaces.
Addressing Years of Neglect
For years, playgrounds and community areas for children have been neglected, leading to closures and deterioration. Over 400 playgrounds in England shut their gates in the past decade, while funding for parks and play facilities was drastically reduced. Simultaneously, childcare costs soared, placing immense strain on working families and forcing tough decisions between careers and caregiving.
These outcomes were not inevitable; they resulted from political choices by the Conservatives, disproportionately affecting communities already facing significant challenges.
Labour's New Approach
Now, a different strategy is in place. Labour's £18 million Playgrounds Fund is restoring and rebuilding safe, high-quality play spaces in 66 communities. This investment is focused on areas with the greatest need, ensuring children from all backgrounds have access to spaces for play, exploration, and growth. Local communities will have a direct role in designing and delivering these playgrounds, putting residents at the center of decision-making.
Expanding Childcare Support
In addition to playground improvements, Labour is taking decisive action to support families with living costs through a major expansion of school-based nurseries. Starting in September, more than 300 additional schools will offer new or expanded nursery provision, creating thousands of new childcare places and making it easier for parents to balance work and family life.
These Best Start nurseries, combined with 30 hours of funded childcare, have already cut costs for working families by half, bringing prices back to levels not seen since 2005. For many parents, this means savings of up to £8,000 annually, providing a crucial boost to household budgets during challenging times.
Local Impact in Dover
In Dover, Lydden Primary School is set to benefit from this new fund. The expansion will deliver over 6,000 new childcare places in the next phase alone, building on thousands already in progress. Nationally, more than a million families are now benefiting from government-funded childcare, simplifying the school run and helping parents return to work with confidence.
A Commitment to Renewal
Together, these investments reflect clear priorities: supporting children and families requires tangible actions, not just words. This means rebuilding essential community spaces and making childcare accessible and affordable for all. For too long, many communities faced reduced opportunities, closed playgrounds, and rising costs. Reversing this trend is about more than repair—it is about renewal.
Giving every child the best start in life is not merely an ambition; it is a responsibility that is finally being met with real, impactful action.
