A former geography teacher has been imprisoned for sexually abusing two teenage students under his care. Anthony Redmond, aged 54, was convicted of multiple offences relating to the exploitation of his position of trust.

The disturbing crimes occurred in the early 2000s when Redmond was employed at a school in Plymouth. The court heard how he preyed upon two 16-year-old schoolgirls, engaging in sexual activity with them at various locations including his home, a hotel, and even on school premises within a cupboard.
Plymouth Crown Court convicted Redmond of five counts of abuse of a position of trust by engaging in sexual activity with one girl, two similar counts involving a second girl, and one count of indecency with a child. The prosecution highlighted how Redmond had attempted to minimise his behaviour and shift responsibility onto his victims.

Both women provided powerful statements detailing the lasting trauma caused by Redmond's actions. The first survivor described how he "took advantage of my naivety and used his position as a teacher to groom me and violate me for his own sexual gratification." The second woman told the court: "He dared to play with my innocence, my vulnerability, my body." She expressed anger that he had been able to operate within a school environment, describing his behaviour as "perverted" and "predatory." Both women spoke of their relief that justice had finally been served after many years of silence.
Sentencing and Consequences
Judge Robert Linford sentenced Redmond to three years and nine months imprisonment, stating that he had betrayed the fundamental trust placed in teachers. The judge acknowledged the devastating impact on Redmond's own family but emphasised the seriousness of the offences.
Redmond must now remain on the sex offenders register for life and has been given a 20-year restraining order relating to his two victims. His defence counsel noted that Redmond had lost his teaching career, professional identity, and standing in the community, describing the situation as a "public disgrace."

A school spokeswoman expressed deep regret for the harm caused to the victims and acknowledged that there were failings at the school when these incidents occurred. The institution has commissioned an independent review of safeguarding arrangements to ensure best practice is embedded moving forward.
Detective Sergeant Luke Portch from Devon and Cornwall Police praised the courage of the survivors in coming forward, noting that "speaking about sexual abuse, regardless of when it occurred, is incredibly difficult." He emphasised that their actions had not only secured justice in this case but might encourage other victims to report similar experiences.
