Virgin Media O2 Urges Parents to Check Eligibility for £12.50 Broadband Social Tariff

Virgin Media O2 is calling on parents across the UK to verify if they qualify for a discounted broadband social tariff priced from £12.50 per month. This initiative comes as the crucial exam season approaches, highlighting the growing importance of reliable internet access for student success.

Internet Becomes Essential for Exam Preparation

New research conducted by Virgin Media O2 reveals that the internet has become increasingly vital for students preparing for exams. The study found that 80% of parents believe the internet is more important to their child's education now compared to just two years ago.

Nearly three-quarters of parents surveyed (73%) stated that home internet access is now as essential for education as textbooks once were. Additionally, 68% of parents expressed concern that children without regular internet access risk falling behind their classmates academically.

Digital Learning Transforms Homework and Revision

The shift toward digital learning is evident in how students complete their academic work. According to the research, 70% of parents report that more than half of their child's homework is completed online.

Students are regularly expected to utilize various digital resources including:

  • School portals or homework platforms (72%)
  • Online revision applications (69%)
  • Video platforms for educational content (64%)
  • Downloadable past examination papers or revision materials (58%)

Because of this significant transition to digital learning methods, 84% of parents assert that home internet access is absolutely essential for their child to perform well in examinations.

Awareness Gap About Available Support

Despite the clear importance of internet connectivity for educational success, the research uncovered a concerning awareness gap. Two in five parents (40%) remain unaware that discounted broadband and mobile tariffs are available to households receiving certain government benefits.

This lack of awareness means many eligible families might be missing out on crucial support during financially challenging times.

Essential Broadband Social Tariff

Virgin Media O2 is actively encouraging eligible families to check whether they qualify for its Essential Broadband social tariff, which starts from just £12.50 per month. This affordable option is designed to help ensure no student is disadvantaged due to lack of internet access during critical educational periods.

Dana Haidan, Chief Sustainability Officer at Virgin Media O2, commented: "Exam season represents one of the most important periods in a young person's education, and today reliable home internet plays a vital role in how students revise and prepare effectively."

Haidan continued: "Many families are experiencing genuine financial pressure, and some may not realize that discounted support is actually available. Through Virgin Media O2's social tariffs, we're helping eligible households access affordable broadband connectivity, ensuring no student is disadvantaged when it matters most for their academic future."

The company's initiative aims to bridge the digital divide and support educational equity as students across the country prepare for their important examinations.
