Ofsted has returned to one of the West Midlands' most prestigious and high-achieving schools, Old Swinford Hospital School in Stourbridge, carrying out a new inspection and sharing its latest verdict.
The education watchdog rated the fee-paying boarding school, which charges up to £13,800 per year, as 'outstanding' across all three inspected areas: overall experiences and progress of children and young people, how well they are helped and protected, and the effectiveness of leaders and managers.
This Stourbridge school attracts some of the brightest children in the region, often from wealthier backgrounds, and has maintained its impeccable record with a perfect score from Ofsted. Its status as a fee-paying boarding school means it does not face the same challenges as typical comprehensive schools, making it more likely to achieve the very best standards.
Ofsted Report Highlights
In its report, Ofsted said: "Boarders make exceptional progress and their experiences are excellent. Their confidence, self-esteem and emotional resilience grow. These positive experiences enrich their lives, support their personal development and broaden their future opportunities."
The report also noted: "New boarders are warmly welcomed. Peer mentoring is a particular strength with senior boarders providing positive role modelling and thoughtful guidance to junior boarders, which creates an inclusive and warm culture. The long-established mentoring and friendship in action programme offers structured peer support and promotes friendship."
Ofsted continued: "These approaches create a nurturing environment in which boarders feel secure. Boarders are inspired to achieve and aim high. A strong aspirational ethos is evident in their motivation, pride and willingness to take on responsibility. They speak enthusiastically about their roles, particularly the valued prefect positions, which they view as a sign of trust and maturity."
