Roman Creations Win Prizes at Bacup School Festival

Crafty children at Northern Primary School in Bacup had their Roman creations judged by visitors to the school’s busy May Festival. Attendees were invited to assess 20 creations made by pupils from Year 3 and pick the best. All of the votes were then counted and checked, with the top three creators winning a £15 cinema voucher.

Creative Roman Projects

From Coliseums to Roman villas, handcrafted wooden swords to Lego structures, the seven- and eight-year-olds enjoyed getting creative. Teacher Josh Hindle said: "We issued this as a family challenge so the children could get creative with the help of their relatives to make an item on a Roman theme. The range of items that they made was what impressed me the most."

First Place: Brody's Helmet and Shield

Getting the most votes was a Roman helmet and intricate shield made by eight-year-old Brody. He said: "My mum and dad helped me to make the shield out of cardboard and it took two days." Brody covered a sieve with tape and painted it silver for the sphere in the centre. He made a helmet from foil which his mum helped to fit to his head. He added: "We then cut the bristles off a brush and fixed them to the helmet." Brody is looking forward to spending his voucher on watching the latest Star Wars film – The Mandalorian and Grogu.

Second Place: Owen's Wooden Sword

In second place was a superbly crafted sword made by Owen, seven, who first made a cardboard template. Step-by-step photos showed him using tools to create the sword. He said: "I got the wood and then used a multitool to cut it and a sander to smooth it before I varnished it." Owen finished his creation with a top coat of clear varnish and stuck string on the handle. His dad made sure he used the tools safely.

Third Place: Molly's Coliseum

Third place went to Molly, eight, who enjoyed making a Coliseum out of cardboard with her dad. It came complete with cardboard columns and people.
