A primary school in Bloxwich that has reached the end of its operational life is set to be demolished following approval from Walsall Council. Bloxwich Primary Academy, located on Leamore Lane, will be replaced by a high-quality two-storey building that will increase its pupil capacity from 447 to 472.
Background and Decision
The Department for Education (DfE) deemed the existing school to be in a poor condition and at the end of its operational life. The school, which is part of the Matrix Academy Trust, will continue its daily operations until the new building is completed in the north east corner of the site. Construction is expected to finish in summer 2028.
Demolition and New Facilities
In addition to the main school building, the caretaker's building will also be demolished. The redevelopment plans include two new multi-use games areas, a football pitch, a 100-metre running track, and 11 additional car parking spaces. Kier Construction Limited has been appointed to carry out the work.
Objections and Improvements
Three objections were raised from third parties concerning parking and traffic during pick-up and drop-off times on Leamore Lane. To address these concerns, the proposals include improved access from Bloxwich Lane and the provision of pedestrian crossings at the school access point.
Community Benefits
Agent WSP stated: “The proposals aim to deliver a new, high-quality and sustainable school along with associated facilities, replacing the existing building which has reached the end of its operational life. The development will bring substantial benefits to staff, students, and the wider community.”
