West Bromwich Albion are optimistic that influential winger Mikey Johnston will be fully fit and ready for pre-season training this summer, following his recovery from a broken ankle.
Johnston's Injury Setback
The 27-year-old attacker missed the final two months of the Championship campaign after suffering a broken ankle during James Morrison's first game as caretaker boss at the end of February, a disappointing defeat at Oxford United. Johnston had been Albion's leading source of assists at the time.
Without him, the Baggies embarked on an impressive unbeaten run of 10 matches, which ultimately secured their Championship survival under Morrison's guidance.
Positive Update from Morrison
Head coach James Morrison provided a positive update on Johnston's progress, stating: "He had his first running session a couple of weeks ago and is progressing well after an injury. It's always nice, that first feeling when you can put your boots on and see your progression."
Morrison added: "Those first few weeks where you can't really do much and you're stuck in the gym are hard. When you get outside and everyone can see you it is a big boost. He'll have a pre-season, he will be ready."
The winger is expected to return to training with his teammates in late June.
Impact on the Team
Johnston's serious injury was viewed as another significant blow for Albion in their battle at the foot of the Championship. Up to Christmas and into the new year, his haul of nine assists was among the highest in the second tier, with only five players surpassing that tally by the end of the season.
Morrison's tactical adjustment to replace Johnston by switching Isaac Price to the left flank proved a masterstroke, as Price's performance level spiked and he played a crucial role in the safety push.
Contract and Future
Johnston has two years left on the contract he signed when he permanently joined West Brom from Celtic for £3 million in 2024. The Republic of Ireland international was close to joining Brazilian giants Flamengo last summer, but a £5 million move fell through at the 11th hour after the Rio de Janeiro club withdrew their interest.
