History came alive for Year 4 pupils at Larchwood Primary School in Brentwood when they stepped back in time to the Second World War during a themed learning day. The children dressed in wartime outfits and spent every lesson immersed in history, including working with re-enactors who brought uniforms, masks, and other period items into the school.
Full Day of Immersive Learning
Headteacher Steve Bowsher explained the significance of the event: "Spending a whole day immersed in history was really exciting for our pupils. They learnt about what it was like to be an evacuee, and then went home and spoke with their families about what they were learning. They brought in medals, photos, and books that their relatives had kept."
Bowsher added: "It was really good to see our children were so excited by their day that they were speaking about it at home. The pupils were very excited to have a whole day of history and not just one lesson. It was an opportunity for them to immerse themselves in a topic and really get a feel for it. They were able to build up bigger knowledge, which will feed into all the other work they do in history."
Hands-On Activities
The day included interactive sessions with re-enactors, who demonstrated authentic equipment and shared stories from the era. Pupils also engaged in classroom activities that explored wartime life, from rationing to evacuation experiences. The school hopes this immersive approach will deepen understanding and spark a lasting interest in history.
