Market Field College Doubles Employment Success for Students with Learning Difficulties

Market Field College in Clacton-on-Sea has achieved a remarkable milestone by doubling the number of students with learning difficulties who successfully transition into employment or professional training. The college, which provides education for 130 students aged 16 to 19 with moderate learning difficulties—including those on the autistic spectrum—has seen its employment rate surge from just 20% three years ago to an impressive 42% in the most recent cohort.

A Focus on Skill-Building and Employer Outreach

This significant improvement is driven by a dedicated focus on skill-building and inclusive outreach to employers. The college has actively collaborated with 70 local businesses to tailor its curriculum, ensuring that young people acquire the precise skills needed for available job opportunities. By aligning education with real-world demands, Market Field College prepares students for meaningful roles in the workforce.

Head of College Duncan Thomas emphasized the institution's mission: "Our aim is to ensure young people can thrive in the community in whatever capacity is appropriate. Building workplace confidence doesn't happen overnight; it's a journey that starts in the classroom and grows through real-world experience."

Preparing Students for Diverse Paths

By the time students complete Year 14, they are equipped to step into employment or specialised training. Thomas highlighted that success is individualised: "For some, that means a paid career, while for others it means playing an active role in the community through volunteering. Our goal is to ensure every young person has a meaningful path forward."

The college's achievements stem from strong partnerships with local businesses of all sizes, whose commitment provides vital opportunities for students. Thomas added: "These achievements are a direct result of staff expertise, employer support and, most importantly, student perseverance. We are not just teaching, we are providing the real-world experience that helps young people move confidently from the classroom into the workplace."

Call for More Business Involvement

Market Field College is keen to expand its network and invites more companies to get involved. Businesses interested in offering work placements or helping shape the curriculum can contact the college via email to explore how they can contribute to this impactful initiative.
