Monmouth Student Wins National Economics Prize

A talented Year 13 student from Haberdashers' Monmouth School has been honoured as the overall champion of the prestigious Schroders Economics Prize, triumphing in a fiercely competitive national contest that attracted top young economists from across the country.

Prestigious Recognition for Outstanding Academic Work

On Wednesday, January 21, three exceptional students from the school - James, Carys and Sophie - were invited to attend an exclusive economics and finance networking lunch at the historic Haberdashers' Hall in London. This invitation came after their submitted essays were shortlisted for the distinguished award, having been selected from an impressive field of Year 13 economists representing all Haberdashers' schools nationwide.

Celebrating Academic Excellence and Professional Networking

The event formed a crucial part of the Haberdashers' Futures Schroders Economics Prize programme, bringing together promising students, experienced finance professionals and distinguished members of the Haberdashers' Company for an afternoon of stimulating discussion and valuable networking opportunities.

The highlight of the occasion arrived when James was announced as the overall winner, with judges particularly praising his submission for its excellent use of diagrams and his critical, well-researched analysis that demonstrated both depth of understanding and innovative thinking.

Valuable Career Insights for Aspiring Economists

All participating students reported that the experience provided invaluable insight into potential careers within finance and economics. Carys described the event as "a great opportunity to hear first-hand accounts from professionals" and gain a realistic understanding of future career pathways.

Sophie expressed particular enjoyment in meeting other students from across the Haberdashers' schools network and learning about their diverse ambitions, ranging from university applications to apprenticeship opportunities.

Bringing Academic Studies to Life

James revealed that speaking directly with professionals from private equity, investment banking and economic consulting helped bring his academic studies to life and gave him a much clearer picture of what these careers involve on a day-to-day basis. He added that he felt both surprised and deeply grateful to have been chosen as the overall winner of such a prestigious competition.

The Schroders Economics Prize continues to serve as an important platform for recognising and nurturing the next generation of economic talent, providing students with unique opportunities to connect their academic learning with real-world professional environments.
