The University of Birmingham is preparing for a landmark celebration, inviting the public to its Edgbaston campus for a spectacular festive event marking its 125th anniversary year.
A Historic Celebration Illuminated
On Wednesday 3 December 2025, families are invited to witness a unique and spectacular first-of-its-kind lightshow. This breathtaking display will be projected directly onto the university's iconic Edwardian buildings, specifically the Aston Webb building near the Old Joe clocktower in Chancellor's Court.
The animated show is designed to tell the story of the University's rich history, highlighting the thinkers, dreamers, and innovators who have shaped its legacy. The narrative will journey from Joseph Chamberlain's original vision for Britain's first civic university to the many people whose work has had a global impact.
There will be three opportunities to see the lightshow, with performances scheduled for 4:15pm, 5:00pm, and 8:00pm.
Festive Fun for All the Family
Beyond the light display, 'Christmas on Campus: 125 edition' offers a full day of activities to kickstart the festive season. Visitors of all ages can immerse themselves in university life with a fantastic array of attractions.
The event will feature an Artisan Market with local craftspeople offering baked goods, unique gifts, and street food. A separate Christmas Craft Fair will showcase handmade items from talented students, alumni, and staff.
Other highlights include:
- Live music, Christmas street performers, and a funfair carousel
- Face painting and fairground games
- Guided tours of a fascinating exhibition on the university's history

Marking 125 Years of Global Impact
Professor Adam Tickell, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Birmingham, commented on the significance of the event. "We look forward to welcoming visitors from across the city for what promises to be a stunning experience," he said. "This magnificent lightshow draws to a close a momentous year in our storied history – 125 years of brilliant people with the vision and talent to make people’s lives better; not just in Birmingham, but around the globe. This is our tribute to them."
Since receiving its Royal Charter from Queen Victoria in 1900, the university's legacy is formidable. It counts 10 Nobel laureates and two former British Prime Ministers among its staff and graduates and is currently ranked among the world's top 100 universities. Its contributions range from pioneering transplant surgery to the creation of artificial Vitamin C.
As a research-intensive Russell Group leader and a founding member of Universitas 21, the University of Birmingham continues to be a global institution with deep roots in one of the UK's most dynamic cities.
