UWE Bristol Boosts UK Economy by Over £1 Billion

UWE Bristol's Economic Contribution Surpasses £1 Billion, Report Reveals

The University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) has been identified as a major economic driver, contributing more than £1 billion to the United Kingdom's economy according to a comprehensive new study. As the largest university in the South West of England, UWE Bristol also generated an impressive £547 million for the local economy and supported nearly 9,000 jobs in the West Country region during a single academic year.

National and Regional Employment Impact

The research conducted by Oxford Economics found that the institution supported approximately 15,000 jobs across Britain in the 2023-2024 period. Additionally, UWE Bristol contributed £242 million in tax revenues during that same timeframe. The university's alumni include notable figures such as television presenter Bear Grylls and comedian Russell Howard, highlighting its broad influence.

Beyond quantifying the economic footprint, the study thoroughly analyzed UWE Bristol's contributions to innovation, research and development, and its overall societal impact. The findings demonstrate the university's role as a crucial anchor institution in both regional and national contexts.

Graduate Employment and Sector Contributions

Over a quarter of UWE Bristol graduates who secured employment in the UK in 2023 entered vital public service roles including:

  • Paramedics
  • Care workers
  • Social workers
  • Nurses

The second-largest cohort of graduates from that year moved into the professional, scientific and technical services sector. This sector represents an increasingly important component of the West of England economy and stands as one of the fastest-growing sectors nationally.

Research, Development and Innovation Infrastructure

UWE Bristol's research and development activities during the 2023-2024 academic year are projected to generate productivity benefits equivalent to £5.2 million across the UK by 2040. This forward-looking impact is significantly supported by the university's University Enterprise Zone (UEZ), which provides innovative technology start-ups and businesses with essential space and facilities.

The UEZ facilities include:

  1. The innovation centre
  2. Future Space, offering high-specification laboratories
  3. Private offices
  4. Technical workshops

Leadership Perspective and Enterprise Ethos

Professor Sir Steve West, vice-chancellor, president and chief executive of UWE Bristol, emphasized that the report "cements UWE Bristol's position as an important anchor institution." He further stated, "The research by Oxford Economics has shown not only the sizable contribution UWE Bristol's staff and students make to the local and national economy, but also the breadth of our societal impact too."

Professor West added, "At the heart of this is our students, who bring vital skills to the region for local employers, particularly those in health and social care. Our enterprise ethos, embedded across programmes and our campuses, is supporting regional productivity by nurturing start-ups and spin-outs at Future Space, alongside world class research collaborations."

Partnerships and Additional Job Creation

Since 2018, UWE Bristol has contributed to the creation of more than 400 new jobs through its Scale up 4 Growth (S4G) partnership with NatWest. The S4G program represents a grant-funding initiative that offers £400,000 in grant funding along with practical support to assist small and medium-sized enterprises in the region with their growth and expansion efforts.
