Wrexham University Unveils £22m Business Gateway as Largest Capital Project
Wrexham University is poised to embark on the most significant capital project in its history with the development of the Wrexham Business Gateway, a £22 million civic and economic hub. This landmark initiative is being supported by Ambition North Wales, marking a major investment in the region and reinforcing the university's role as a key anchor institution.
A Hub for Innovation and Collaboration
The Wrexham Business Gateway will be situated at the heart of the university campus, offering a range of flexible, future-facing facilities designed to foster growth and connectivity. Key features include:

- Innovation and digital laboratories for advanced research
- Leadership and professional development provision
- Public-facing clinics and community engagement areas
- Event spaces to promote collaboration and networking
This project aims to strengthen partnerships with regional stakeholders, including Wrexham AFC, local employers, civic organisations, and public services, creating a synergistic environment for economic advancement.
Funding and Strategic Vision
The development has secured £4 million from the North Wales Investment Zone, underscoring a commitment to supporting high-value manufacturing and advanced industries. According to university officials, the Gateway is designed to connect city, campus, and community, serving as a visible focal point for enterprise, skills development, and knowledge exchange.
Professor Joe Yates, vice-chancellor of Wrexham University, emphasised the transformative potential of the project, stating, "The Wrexham Business Gateway is more than a building – it's a platform for transformation. It represents our ambition to connect education with enterprise and opportunity, and to play a leading role in shaping a stronger, more innovative regional economy."
Impact on Business Education and Regional Growth
Upon completion, the Wrexham Business Gateway will become the new home of Wrexham Business School, recently led by newly appointed dean Dr Ruth Slater. She highlighted the facility's role in talent development, noting, "The Wrexham Business Gateway creates a powerful new home for Wrexham Business School, bringing business, learning, and leadership together in one place. It will play a vital role in developing regional talent, supporting enterprise, and strengthening the skills needed for long-term economic growth."
Paul Moran, Capital Projects Manager at Wrexham University, added that the project has been developed through close collaboration with partners to create a thriving space for students, businesses, and the community. The Gateway is a flagship component of the university's Campus 2030 vision, expected to drive job creation, skills development, business growth, and private investment, thereby future-proofing the regional economy.
