Pupils from Chilton Primary School in Ramsgate have taken part in the nationwide 2026 Big Schools' Birdwatch event for the very first time. The initiative proved to be a tremendous success, capturing the enthusiasm of children, their families, and school staff alike.
Young Scientists in Action
Every child at the school dedicated time to outdoor observation, carefully scanning the skies, trees, hedgerows, and gardens within the school grounds. Their mission was to spot and identify various bird species, demonstrating keen scientific curiosity and engagement.
Tools and Techniques for Bird Identification
To aid in their discoveries, the school's science lead, Carol Isaac, prepared special bird identification charts. The young participants eagerly used these resources, employing both the naked eye and binoculars to get closer views and images of their feathered subjects. Among the notable sightings were parakeets, adding excitement to their watch.
Supporting Wildlife Beyond the School Gates
As part of a broader commitment to understanding and supporting local wildlife, the children also crafted bird feeders to install around the school premises. Furthermore, they were encouraged to extend their participation by joining the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch as a component of their home learning activities.
Contributing to National Conservation Efforts
Miss Isaac highlighted the significance of the pupils' work, stating: "All our bird spotting will help the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds have a snapshot of the bird population to aid their invaluable conservation work." The children meticulously recorded their findings, noting down species, along with the time, location, and date of each sighting.
She added: "The children were really engaged with the project, and a huge well done goes to all our young participants and everyone who took part at home." The collected data is submitted to the RSPB, which uses it to compile annual rankings of the most commonly spotted birds.
School and Community Context
Chilton Primary School operates under the Viking Academy Trust, partnering with Ramsgate Arts Primary and Upton Junior School. This birdwatching event underscores the school's dedication to fostering environmental awareness and scientific learning among its pupils.
