Storm Goretti wrecks Dudley Zoo's flamingo enclosure, sparking £75k fundraiser
Dudley Zoo launches £75k appeal after storm damage

Dudley Zoo and Castle has launched an urgent public fundraising appeal after severe winter weather caused catastrophic damage to one of its most popular habitats.

Storm's Fury Destroys Key Habitat

Storm Goretti battered the West Midlands on Friday, January 9, 2026, bringing heavy snow and powerful winds that wreaked havoc across the 40-acre site. The primary casualty was Flamingo Falls, the netted outdoor home for the zoo's flock of 21 Chilean and American flamingos, situated near the main entrance.

Initial assessments, made once the snow subsided, reveal the structure has been extensively destroyed. Zoo management has stated the damage will require a complete rebuild of the outdoor habitat, with costs estimated to be well in excess of £75,000.

Animals Safe But Facing Long Indoor Stay

Thankfully, all animals at the zoo, including the entire flamingo flock and their red-breasted goose neighbours, were unharmed. They had been moved to their secure indoor areas as a precaution ahead of the storm and remain safe and well.

However, without a viable outdoor enclosure, the birds face an indefinite period indoors. The zoo, which operates as a non-profit charity, has emphasised that the rebuild is essential for the animals' welfare and the visitor experience.

Charity Appeals for Public Support

In a statement on Facebook, the zoo described the aftermath of the storm as a "very difficult" period. "Like other attractions in the area, we were hit badly by Storm Goretti, which caused considerable damage to animal enclosures and trees," the post explained.

The zoo has now set up a JustGiving page to gather donations for the reconstruction project. It highlighted its reliance on visitors and supporters to fund both its global conservation work and the day-to-day care of its animals.

"We rely entirely on the support of visitors, supporters and members... any support would be much appreciated at this time," the appeal stated. The funds raised will be directed solely towards rebuilding a safe and enriching outdoor environment for the distinctive pink birds.
