The Rossendale Ramblers have been making the most of the winter weather, with a series of invigorating walks that culminated in a beautiful sunny stroll around Bolton's reservoirs.
From Breezy Hills to Historic Trespass Sites
Despite a generally cold and wet spell, the group's luck held on a recent Wednesday walk. 21 walkers embarked on a brisk nine-mile route starting from Smithills Hall in Bolton, heading up to the iconic Winter Hill with its television masts. This path is steeped in local history, as the group passed the site of the Mass Trespass of 1896. This significant event, which occurred 36 years before the famous Kinder Scout trespass, saw an estimated 10,000 Bolton residents successfully assert their right to roam by overcoming police and gamekeepers to access the Winter Hill path.
A Sun-Drenched Sunday Stroll
The weekend brought a complete change in conditions. On Sunday, 15 ramblers were treated to a six-mile walk in glorious sunshine. Setting off from the volunteer-run Barlow Institute in Edgworth, the group took in the serene beauty of Wayoh Reservoir, followed by Turton and Entwistle Reservoir. The calm conditions provided perfect, stunning reflections on the water, making for a particularly picturesque outing.
Upcoming Walks for All
The Ramblers have a full schedule of forthcoming events designed to welcome newcomers. On Saturday, December 6, they are hosting one of their popular two-hour pub walks, starting from Summerseat. These friendly walks are an ideal introduction to the group, with an optional lunch available afterwards.
The following day, Sunday, December 7, offers a six-mile local walk titled 'From Weir to Water and Back'. This countryside ramble promises excellent views if the weather is fair and is scheduled to finish by 2pm, leaving plenty of time for weekend family activities.
Midweek, on Wednesday, December 10, a more challenging nine-mile walk will commence from Cliviger. This route will take in the Long Causeway wind farm and Hurstwood Reservoir before returning via a different path.
