British Gas Introduces Major Electricity Bill Reduction on Sundays
British Gas has announced a significant initiative to cut electricity bills by 50% for five hours every Sunday, benefiting over 1 million customers through its PeakSave scheme. This program allows participants to enjoy half-price electricity during off-peak times, specifically from 11am to 4pm each Sunday.
Substantial Savings and Environmental Impact
Since the launch of PeakSave, customers have collectively saved more than £36 million on their electricity bills. Impressively, over 150 customers have each saved more than £150. Beyond financial benefits, the scheme has contributed to environmental sustainability by shifting 40,000 MWh of electricity to off-peak periods, which helps the grid operate more efficiently and supports greener energy sources.
This shift has resulted in a reduction of 2,939 tonnes of carbon emissions, equivalent to removing 797 cars from the road for an entire year. British Gas explains that Sundays are ideal for this initiative because energy demand is typically lower, making it a perfect opportunity for customers to optimize their electricity use.
Customer Experiences and Practical Tips
Customers have praised the PeakSave scheme for its practical advantages. One user shared, "I have structured my washing, bulk cooking, and using my tumble dryer only to a Sunday! It’s helped me form a routine which is so helpful in my busy life, and I know I will be saving so much money whilst doing this." Another customer noted, "I do like the new opportunities to save a few bob on energy, such as peak savings. Anything helps." A third added, "Using the oven to batch cook on PeakSave day and doing two loads of washing is very satisfying."
British Gas encourages customers to use as much electricity as needed during the designated hours to maximize savings. However, the company advises that eligibility checks may take up to 10 days to complete. Only those already registered or invited via email can participate, and credits depend on individual electricity usage, generation, and battery configuration.
This initiative not only aids household budgets but also promotes energy efficiency and environmental responsibility, aligning with broader efforts to reduce carbon footprints and support sustainable energy practices.
