British Gas Unveils Major Update for Renters and Flat Residents
British Gas has issued a significant announcement targeting customers who rent or live in flats, highlighting plug-in solar panels as a straightforward solution to reduce household energy costs. The energy giant confirms that these innovative solar kits are poised to become widely accessible in the United Kingdom within the coming months, thanks to support from the Labour Party government.
What Are Plug-In Solar Panels?
Plug-in solar panels, also referred to as plug and play solar or balcony solar, are compact solar systems designed for ease of use. British Gas explains that they can be placed on balconies, terraces, shed roofs, or other outdoor spaces. Users simply connect the plug-in solar inverter into a standard three-pin socket to start generating electricity immediately for home use, thereby decreasing reliance on the grid.
This setup is particularly beneficial for renters, residents of flats, and those with small homes or limited outdoor areas like balconies and small gardens. It offers a low-cost, low-commitment entry point into clean energy generation, making renewable power more accessible to a broader audience.
Government Regulations and Retail Availability
British Gas notes that the government has approved changes to wiring regulations, allowing systems under 800 watts to plug safely into domestic sockets without requiring an electrician. These updates are expected to take effect from summer 2026. Retailers such as Lidl are already preparing to stock plug-in solar panels in the UK, following their popularity in Europe. For instance, over 426,000 balcony solar systems were registered in Germany alone in 2025.
Chris O'Shea, CEO of Centrica, parent company of British Gas, expressed support for these developments, including the Future Homes Standard. He stated, "It's a chance to ensure new homes come ready for the full benefits of modern energy systems - where low-carbon heating, solar and smart technology are designed to work together from the start and reduce energy consumption." O'Shea added that British Gas engineers are prepared to help keep homes warm across the nation.
