EDF, one of the UK's leading energy suppliers, has made a significant announcement that will benefit thousands of households across the country. The company is extending its popular Sunday Saver scheme throughout the entire month of February, providing customers with the opportunity to earn free electricity during specific hours. This initiative is designed to help consumers manage their energy costs during the winter months when bills typically peak.
How the Sunday Saver Scheme Works
The Sunday Saver scheme operates on a simple yet effective principle. To qualify for free electricity, households must actively reduce their electricity consumption during weekday peak hours, which are set between 4pm and 7pm. By doing so, customers can earn between four and sixteen hours of free electricity on the following Sunday, depending on the level of reduction achieved.
Earning Free Electricity Hours
The scheme offers a tiered reward system based on the percentage of peak usage reduction:
- 5% reduction: Earns four hours of free electricity
- 20% reduction: Earns eight hours of free electricity
- 35% reduction: Earns twelve hours of free electricity
- 50% reduction: Earns the full sixteen hours of free electricity
Impressive Savings and Environmental Benefits
Since its launch in 2024, the Sunday Saver scheme has already delivered substantial benefits to EDF customers. The company has confirmed that more than 260,000 households have participated, resulting in total bill savings exceeding £5.2 million. Additionally, an impressive 7.5 million hours of free electricity have been distributed through the programme.
Jon Perks, Sales & Marketing Director at EDF, commented on the scheme's success: “With winter bills at their highest, Sunday Saver continues to give customers a simple, practical way to cut costs when they need it most. Households can track their usage through our Energy Hub, and spot opportunities to save electricity across their home, reducing their carbon footprint at the same time. It’s a straightforward way to ease pressure on bills while supporting a more sustainable electricity grid.”
Tracking and Management Tools
EDF provides customers with access to their Energy Hub, an online platform that allows households to monitor their electricity usage in real-time. This tool helps users identify patterns and opportunities for reducing consumption, particularly during peak hours. By making small adjustments to their energy habits, customers can maximise their savings while contributing to environmental sustainability.
Broader Implications for Energy Consumers
The extension of the Sunday Saver scheme through February comes at a crucial time for many UK households facing rising energy costs. This initiative not only offers financial relief but also encourages more responsible energy consumption practices. By incentivising reduced usage during peak periods, EDF is helping to balance demand on the national grid, which can lead to more stable energy prices and reduced strain on infrastructure.
As winter continues, such schemes demonstrate how energy suppliers can play a proactive role in supporting customers through challenging economic times while promoting greener energy habits.
